We catch up with Robin Goomes after having just won the first-ever female Crankworx Slopestyle competition.
Interview and photos by Sven Martin.
Sven: Robin when I first met you, you were racing enduro, racing downhill. There kind of really wasn’t anything like this for you women.
Robin: No. That feels like a lifetime ago actually but it wasn’t so long ago. Yeah, we’ve come a long way. It’s sick to be a part of it.
S: You took a conscious decision a couple of years ago to kind of ditch the racing and focus on this kind of stuff. Tell me about your thoughts on today and where you are now?
R: I don’t know. Today was a pretty unbelievable feeling. Being at home is really special. Like, being on the course for McGazza and everything about this one was really special as well as, you know, it was the first time for the women. I can’t believe it.
S: Was this a dream or a goal?
R: It was a long term goal. I didn’t I’d be here now.
S: Now we have a series for you girls and even more importantly have you seen the amount of little shredders we have here in New Zealand and all around the world? Whether that’s skateboarding, surfing and biking, so there’s going to be a lot more than six of you girls here in the very near future.
R: I agree with that. Kiwis go hard. Big up the Kiwis.
S: Big up the Kiwis. Where do you celebrate something like this?
R: I’m gonna put a hefty tab on some nice bar in town somewhere I think and see what happens. See where the night takes us.
S: There you go.
R: See you there.
