After wrapping up the first round of the UCI EDR MTB WC in Maydena, Tasmania, we were immediately back in it, just a few hour’s drive north in Derby, Tasmania.
Derby presented racers with a new set of challenges after Maydena’s gravity-focused stages. Derby’s flowy but physical trail centre tracks were full of natural features and big rock drops, throwing tech at riders left, right and lung-busting-pedally centre. The trails had a bit of everything – don’t just take our word for it, check out Sven’s course preview here.
The weather at the beginning of the weekend didn’t do racers any favours. Rain soaked the stages, making for a tough day of practice; ultimately, everything ran a tad slower during the race as the course dried out.
The Tassie crowds followed and brought their enthusiasm from the previous weekend, cheering and urging racers to push their limits – including a few silent heckles for some of their favourite riders.
When it came down to the racing, the Yeti Fox Factory Team achieved a rare feat, finishing 1, 1, 2 in the elite categories. Congrats to Bex, Richie, and Slawomir!
In the elite women’s race, the British contingent reigned supreme. Bex Baraona and Hattie Harnden battled for the top spot throughout the day, with Bex ultimately claiming victory. Ella Conolly secured the final place on the podium. Isabeau Courdurier, despite suffering a leg injury in practice, managed a respectable fourth-place finish, while Morgane Charre rounded out the top five.
Elite men’s saw Richie Rude take the top spot. Jesse Melamed, Jack Moir, and Martin Maes were all back up at the sharp end. Slawamir Lukasik was determined to shake things up and finished in second – his best-ever result – even snatching a few stage wins along the way.
In the U21 men’s category, Sascha Kim took his second win of the year, followed by Cooper Lowe and Lisandru Bertini. Meanwhile, Erice van Leuven, Elly Hoskin, and Lia Ladbrook made up the U21 women’s podium. Check out the full results here.
That’s the first block of 2023 EDR racing wrapped up. Now we have a bit of a break until the third round in Finale Ligure, Italy, in June (see us there – we’re based at Finale Work Space). We hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage over these first two races – please let us know what you think. Crikey, we even started a podcast.
Thank you to everyone that has helped, commented, liked, shared, listened, watched, read, written, edited, designed, reported, podcasted and photographed, especially the sleep-deprived photographers Boris Beyer, Sven Martini and Seb Schieck.
Until next time.
